A day in Horie, Osaka's furniture and vintage district

A day in Horie that takes in the furniture showrooms, 9,000 vintage pieces, the shrine where Mitsubishi began and one small brewery, in the order the opening hours allow.

A day in Horie, Osaka's furniture and vintage district
Osaka, Japan

Tachibana-dori ran as a furniture street in the Edo period, and shops still sell furniture along it. The road is 800 m of low-rise Minami-Horie, two lanes wide, with no arcade roof overhead. It sits one street south of America-mura's Triangle Park, 3 minutes from Yotsubashi Station.

Tachibana-dori (Orange Street) (Minami-Horie) is the spine of Horie and the street most people come for. Plate-glass furniture showrooms stand next to concrete-and-timber boutique fronts. Slim street trees break up the pavement, and bicycles lean along the kerb. It is a public street, free to walk at any hour. Walk it first; the shops along it are small.

The ONOE FURNITURE (Horie flagship), Osaka
The ONOE FURNITURE (Horie flagship), Osaka

The design and fashion trade here grew out of the old timber and furniture business, and one shop still runs in that line. The ONOE FURNITURE (Minami-Horie 1-14-8) has been a Horie furniture house since the 1920s and moved into this 1-chōme flagship in 2019. Behind full-height glazing, the shop stages three floors as complete rooms: Artek stools, Carl Hansen wishbone chairs and Herman Miller pieces on pale oak. Browsing is free and walk-ins are welcome, though staff prefer a call ahead for anything resembling a tour. Expect ¥¥¥¥. Doors open at 11:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, close at 20:00, and the showroom shuts only over New Year.

Vintage rails and the green block

JAM Horie Orange Street (Minami-Horie 1-19-23) keeps around 9,000 second-hand pieces across two upper floors of the Avant-garde Building, roughly 460 m² of densely hung rails under a bare industrial ceiling and strip lights. Walls of US college sweats and Hawaiian shirts face stacked denim. It opens 11:00 to 20:00 daily with no door policy, and it is a far calmer browse than the Amerikamura shops a few minutes east. Prices run ¥¥.

COFLO (Minami-Horie 1-21-9) commissions the paint on its own walls, and live-painting sessions on the shop floor have put the frontage on the city's mural routes. Pastel cartoon BOYS characters and spray-can lettering by the local artists YAMEPI and Sora Aota cover the exterior; socks and skate-cut tees hang on sparse racks inside. The shop takes two or three people at a time, so send the rest of your party on up the street. Looking at the painted frontage from the pavement costs nothing.

BIOTOP OSAKA (Minami-Horie 1-16-1) packs most of what Horie does into one green-draped block: fashion, plants, coffee and a rooftop Italian kitchen. Ferns and olive trees spill off every balcony, and a botanical nursery fills street level. The 4th-floor terrace, CUBIERTA, sits under open sky behind a glasshouse frame, with a wood-fired pizza oven at the back. The store is free to wander. The rooftop runs 11:00 to 23:00 and takes bookings, which is worth doing for a summer evening. Treat the whole building as one stop. The price band is ¥¥¥.

Kita-Horie's shrine and temple

Tosa Inari Shrine, Osaka
Tosa Inari Shrine, Osaka

Tosa Inari Shrine (Kita-Horie 4-9-7) was the guardian shrine of the Tosa clan's riverside warehouse, later acquired by Iwasaki Yatarō. Mitsubishi began on this compact walled patch of Kita-Horie, and the stonework still says so: perimeter pillars carved with the names of Mitsubishi group companies, and the three-diamond crest on the shrine lanterns. Bronze komainu lions with unusually rounded faces sit behind a stone torii, with cherry trees over the gravel forecourt. The precinct is open and free, and locals have come here for the blossom for a long time. Walking groups and guided history tours come through regularly.

Wako-ji Temple (Amida-ike), Osaka
Wako-ji Temple (Amida-ike), Osaka

Wako-ji Temple (Amida-ike) (Kita-Horie 3-7-27) was founded in 1698 to 1699, at the birth of Horie Shinchi, the reclaimed new land the district takes its name from. The Jōdo-sect nunnery is built around a square stone-edged pond with a small hexagonal pavilion on an islet mid-pond, reached by a short bridge. Turtles bask on the stones, and a plain white-walled main hall stands behind. The Amida pond is an Osaka city-designated historic site and gave nearby Amida-ike-suji its name. Grounds are free and open in daylight. Monks write goshuin stamps on Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 to 14:00 only, and the free car park takes several coaches.

Horie Park and the central library

Horie Park (Minami-Horie 1-13) is a small rectangular park mid Orange Street, wedged between apartment blocks, 4 minutes from Yotsubashi. Mature cherry trees stand over wooden benches, with a sand-and-paving play corner at one end and boutique shopfronts visible across the road. It is unfenced, free and open 24 hours. The park is unremarkable for most of the year and lovely for the 10 days when the cherries open. It has no facilities for events, and the benches do what they look like they do: hold people and takeaway coffee for a while.

Osaka Municipal Central Library (Kita-Horie 4-3-2) rises straight out of Exit 7 of Nishi-Nagahori Station at Horie's western edge, a pale-stone civic block from 1996 with a deep full-height atrium and long rows of open stacks over multiple floors. The collection runs to 2.3 million volumes, which makes it Osaka's flagship public library and one of Japan's biggest municipal collections. Anyone can enter and browse free, visitors included; borrowing needs an Osaka address, work or study tie. Wide reading tables sit under even strip lighting, and this is a working reading room, so keep your voice down. Weekday closing is 20:30 and weekend closing is 17:00. It is a free, air-conditioned fallback for a wet afternoon.

Coffee, bread and a timber warehouse

MONDIAL KAFFEE 328 NY3 (Kita-Horie 1-6-16) pours latte-art rosettas to competition standard, supervised to world-champion level, and the kitchen sends out butter-soaked thick toast. It occupies the ground floor of a residential block, fitted out in New York loft style, with black steel frames, subway tile and a long communal timber counter facing the espresso bar. It runs 08:30 to 21:00 daily, so it covers the early start and the after-shopping stop alike. The room fills between 09:00 and 11:00.

WEST WOOD BAKERS, Osaka
WEST WOOD BAKERS, Osaka

WEST WOOD BAKERS (Minami-Horie 1-16-9) stands beside BIOTOP and bakes naturally leavened sourdough, bagel sandwiches and pancakes from domestic wheat. Doughnuts appear at weekends only. Loaf shelves sit open behind glass in a California-casual room of pale wood, with a few pavement-facing seats. Hours are 09:00 to 20:00 with no fixed closing day, and a short queue forms at weekends. The room suits four people and gets awkward beyond that; take the bread down to Horie Park instead. ¥¥.

Cafe Charbon (Kita-Horie 1-6-23) is the Horie original, a post-war lumber warehouse from the district's timber-trade days now trading as an all-day café and bar, a minute from Yotsubashi. Ceilings reach 8 m over exposed dark roof trusses and ductwork, with mismatched vintage furniture on a worn concrete floor and big industrial windows along the wall. A bakery pop-up opened inside in April 2026. Service runs 11:30 to 22:00, to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. It takes reservations and seats a table of 10 without strain.

Drinking and eating after dark

BAK HORIE Brewing Studio, Osaka
BAK HORIE Brewing Studio, Osaka

BAK HORIE Brewing Studio (Kita-Horie 2-7-1) opened in January 2025 and remains, as of early 2026, the only place in Horie brewing on site. Stainless fermenters and hoses stand behind glass a few metres from the bar, with high stools at a long counter, taps on a plain steel wall and poured concrete underfoot. The dining space takes bookings. The brewery floor limits the total number of seats, so a standing round is the easier plan.

Ponpocotei Minami-Horie (狸狸亭) (Minami-Horie 2-5-26) is the Osaka-food counterweight to all the brunch, on the ground floor of the Granvia block. Sunken teppan griddle tables sit under extraction hoods, batter and cabbage mounded on the hot plate, bottles of sauce and mayo lined up within reach. Okonomiyaki and teppanyaki run to 01:00 on weekdays. Set courses and a 2-hour all-you-can-drink option are available, the kitchen takes reservations, and it closes on Thursdays. Prices are ¥¥.

Minami-Horie knave (Minami-Horie 3-11-21) is a long-running Osaka live house in the basement under the Tall Valley building: a 230-capacity black box with a low stage, PA stacks either side, bare pipework overhead and a side bar along the back. It is the Horie evening that happens away from a table. Tickets go per gig and the room is standing only. Doors vary by show and typically open from 18:00, advance tickets sell for the bigger names, and the schedule is confirmed through late 2026. Check what is on before you fix a night here.

Where to stay in Horie

MIMARU Osaka Namba North (Minami-Horie 1-2-10) holds 40 apartments of 39 m² to 41 m², each with a kitchenette and dining table, bunk beds against the wall in the family rooms, and a small arcade corner off the lobby. Rooms sleep four adults plus two children, the front desk is multilingual, and a coin laundry sits in the building. It stands 3 minutes from Yotsubashi Station on Horie's quiet eastern edge and 10 walking minutes from Dotonbori, which puts the Minami nightlife on foot from a residential street. Rooms are ¥¥¥. Book early, because Osaka's room supply is tight.
